Tilshead Borehole Levels: Sunday 19th January 2023

The last couple of weeks have been most interesting on the aquifer front.  We’ve had remarkably little rain since the first week of January as shown here by Sandy Sims’ weather station in St Peter’s Close:

The last substantive rainfall was on the 16th of January when 0.4mm was recorded and before that, five days earlier on the 11th of January, when a similar amount was recorded. However, the water level in the aquifer has been rising steadily since the 8th of January; the heavy rain on the 4th and 5th pushing the whole system into reverse.

The level has now probably peaked and may begin to fall over the next few days.  The groundwater Flood Alert issued by the Environment Agency remains in force.  It may be updated on Tuesday, or as the situation changes.  The weather today is going to be cold, grey and miserable.  There may be a few light showers overnight.  As we move into the new week, there is a chance of drizzle with rain coming into the equation by Wednesday.  We are then going to move into a period of changeable, unsettled weather with longer periods of rain and showers which seems likely to continue for the rest of January.  That now seems likely to continue into early February, with warmer and drier weather moving in by mid-month.
