After a long, hot, and exceptionally dry summer, you might be forgiven for thinking that water levels in the River Till aquifer would be very low and to some extent that is true. The current water level is about 0.7 metres below the 6 year average, but don’t be fooled by that. Water was still flowing from the springs to the west of Till Cottage in early October, and water was still flowing under the Dryden Street bridge in late October. The current situation looks as follows:
December rainfall is an entirely different matter. We are already only one week into December 2018 and the month is already the 3rd wettest in the last six years. As I write, we are experiencing yet another torrential downpour and there is more rain forecast for the weekend and possibly into next week. The longer term forecast is for yet more rain, certainly up until Christmas. It will be interesting to see how the heavy rain over the next few days will affect the overall water levels and by the end on next week, there may be a clearer idea of how water levels might rise this winter.
